An article in Izvestiya (August 7) entitled ‘Bulldozers through Solovki” complains about excessive construction work on the Solovetsky Islands off the north Russian coast. (The islands are the site of a former monastery and a place of exile for many Orthodox bishops during the 1920s.) The article contrasts the labors of the monks during almost 400 years with the “barbarous methods of quarrying” of current workers. (KNS #333, 8/7/89)
