News has reached the West that Orthodox priest Fr. Vladimir Fedorenko is serving a 5-year sentence in a concentration camp in the Donetsk region of the Ukraine. He was arrested some time prior to 1982 in his church at which time he was also beaten. He was charged with speculation in the icon business, a criminal offense, although the real reason behind his arrest was the freedom with which he expressed his views and his dissemination of religious literature. In the camp Fr. Vladimir is subjected to constant beatings at the hands of criminals with whom he is imprisoned; this suggests the tacit approval of the camp administration.
